After his training as a Jesuit and studies in Feldkirch (Austria), Valkenburg (Netherlands), Innsbruck (Austria) und Bonn (Germany) he taught theology at the University of Innsbruck since 1935 and was appointed professor of the history of the Early Church. He was a specialist in patrology. When the Nazis closed the faculty as well as the Canisianum, an international major seminary, he was sent to Sion (Sitten) in Switzerland where the formation of priests was continued. During these years of exile he got into touch with the Eranos circle at the Lago Maggiore. Hugo Rahner belonged to a group of Jesuits who inaugurated the »Verkündigungstheologie«, a sort of theology which focused on the kerygmatic conveyance of theology. He was elected Dean and Rector of the University of Innsbruck. As an interdisciplinary thinker Hugo Rahner endowed encounter: with St Ignatius of Loyola as a theologian (and not merely a saint), with the theology of symbols, with the world of the early church fathers. The noted preacher and pastor had to resign in the early 1960ies after the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. | ||
