| Summary: | In the first half of the nineteenth century three messiahs were active in Yemen: Shukr Kuhayl I, Shukr Kuhayl II, and Yusuf Abdallah. The most famous of them was Shukr Kuhayl II, who was active from 1868 to 1875. There are extant today epistles which Shukr Kuhayl II sent to various places outside Yemen, but of the epistles which he sent to communities throughout Yemen only three epistles are known at the moment from which anything can be learned about his activity among Yemenite communities. In this paper I publish twenty-two epistles connected with the activity of Shukr Kuhayl II, whose distinction is that they are from one community in central Yemen. The epistles are rich in information in several areas: repentance, hope for salvation, request for monetary and economic aid, as well as his military and diplomatic activity. The epistles which I publish here will also enlighten us about the duration of the movement's activity, and will even shed light on the nature of his influence on the various communities throughout Yemen, from which we have at the moment no knowledge about his activity. |
