Summary: | The Ehud pericope has played a central role in the scholarly discussion of whether Biblical historical texts should be considered "history" or "literature." This paper evaluates the positions of R. Alter and B. Halpern on this issue, and suggests that the Ehud pericope should be understood as political satire, a literary genre that is best understood within a historical context. Therefore, a literary approach which also considers ancient historical settings is most appropriate for understanding this unit. |
