Summary:Since the beginning of western translation-theory the problem how to deal with sacred texts held a singular importance. Until today translation-theories often prove to be inspired by theological issues (Schleiermacher, Benjamin, Nida, Meschonnic). Some of these questions will be discussed in the present paper by the means of the distinction between horizontal and vertical translation and referring to two historical examples: Jerome's bible translation and the bible translation of Port-Royal.
