| Summary: | "Fixed expressions" in Hittite, in particular the subset containing terms of body parts, still continue to pose problems. Starting from the examples attested in rituals and prayers, this paper is aimed at elucidating the use of predicative constructions made up of the verbs lagand nai- 'to turn' or parā epp- 'to proffer' with the nouns ištaman(a)- 'ear' or šakui- 'eye' as direct object. It will be suggested that in the interaction between gods and humans these redundant constructions have an emphatic purpose, and that their use is consistent with the some morpho-syntactic reasons which determine the distribution of verbal stems in -ške-, ḫark- constructions, and adverbs. |
