| Summary: | This article presents a commented edition of a hitherto unknown version of a namburbiritual against the evil portended by a lightning strike. BM 42273, a Late Babylonian tablet from Babylon, contains both ritual instructions and a bilingual incantation addressed to Nergal, which would be recited during the ritual in order to appease the god and thereby avert the evil. While it generally resembles known rituals of this types, it sheds new light on certain aspects of the ritual, and the incantation offers Akkadian translations of lines that were so far only preserved in Sumerian. |
