Description
Summary:"Ptolemaic" is often used as term within Egyptology. This article discusses in which sense there actually is a specific entity "Ptolemaic". The texts normally understood as being "Ptolemaic" are the monumental temple inscriptions of the Graeco-Roman period. However, they do not form a linguistically closed group. While most are composed in classical Egyptian, there are also cases of Late Egyptian and Demotic language. This can be shown in different genres, and the question has to be raised to which degree diversity of language is related to the actual date of composition. More specific for "Ptolemaic" texts is a writing system of increased complexity. Its possible motivations are discussed. Finally, competence in reading this graphic system is recognised as the most specific part of "Ptolemaic" studies. It is stressed that Egyptology does not need the creation of separate sub-disciplines but rather a conception of tool kits or "areas of competence" which could and should be freely combined in order to achieve maximum success.
