Summary: | The article evaluates a letter from the Old Testament scholar Hermann Gunkel to the Egyptologist Adolf Erman, which touches on the relationship between the Old Testament and the Ancient Near Eastern cultures. Against the backdrop of what has become known as the 'Babel-Bibel-Streit' and in combination with a passage of Ermans autobiography "Mein Werden und mein Wirken" the letter from the Bremer Erman-Archive indicates that Erman was on the side of Friedrich Delitzsch but because of his view of a strict distinction between academic research and public discussion he avoided any public statement. |
