Sumario:The paper calls attention to a central feature of the most successful religious movements present in Argentina (and other countries of the area): their strong supply of magic. Given the fragile nature of the construction of magical efficacy, it is argued that this supply entails the need for an intense work of frame-maintenance. In order to be competitive - in the long run - in the religious market, these group must fulfill at least one of two conditions: 1) they must transform the initial demand for specific compensators into a search for - or acceptance of - general compensators; 2) they must have a diversity of internal variants through which individuals may wander in their search for specific compensators. The different efficiency with which groups manage their supply of magical goods is a relevant factor in the explanation of the religious dynamics in the country. The paper also shows that a supply-side perspective and a critical use of the concepts of magic and religion provided by Stark and Bainbridge in their formal theory of religion can be fruitfully applied to analyze Latin-American reality.
