Description
Summary:In this paper, it is described and interpreted the use of some techniques of the body used in rituals of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, based on the Marcel Mauss’s classic definition of these techniques: “The ways how people, society by society, in a traditional way, know to use their body” (“Les façons dont les hommes, societé par societé, d’une façon tradicionelle, savent se servir de leur corps”). The fieldwork was carried out in Belém, State of Pará, Brazil, in four catholic parishes. The described and interpreted techniques were, among others: corporal touch, laying of hands, dance, glossolalia (speaking in tongues) and resting in the Spirit. A comparison was done with the techniques of the body used in a kind of shamanic cult, very popular among rural inhabitants (“caboclos”) of Brazilian Amazon Region named “pajelança cabocla”. Although many of these techniques are almost the same, it should be emphasized that the main difference is based in the way how the people conceives them, that is, in their different meanings.
