Summary: | The ancient concept of the two sexes as it is expressed for instance by Galen and Plutarch offers a solid foundation for the interpretation of Mary Magdalene in Gnostic texts. Men and women are both forms of the one human sex with women being the weaker, men the better developed specimens. In the Gospel of Thomas, in order to be redeemed Mary has to be made into a male being. In the Gospel of Mary she figures as a purified, male Gnostic, and in the Gospel of Philip she becomes the image of Sophia, the syzygy of Jesus. Therefore Logion 114 in the Gospel of Thomas is part of the base stock of this Gospel, because the motif of a male Mary is resumed and is developed further in the Gospel of Mary and in the Gospel of Philip. As a result no historical information about the relationship between Mary Magdalene and Jesus can be inferred. |
