Summary: | This paper attempts to identify the literary genre of the Acts of Peter and the Twelve Apostles as a parable narrative. Structurally it contains all the constituent elements of many parable narratives found in the canonical gospels and elsewhere. It is the identification of ActsP12 as an organic parable narrative with all the necessary components of such a literary designation that supports a cohesive reading of the text. A cohesive reading of the text is both informed by the literary structure of the text, which is imposed by the genre, as well as by its narrative content. The text is read from the perspective of the “model reader” who accepts the narrative clues of the “model author,” namely the text itself, at face value. According to the text, a parable “lurks” in the literary “woods” of ActP12. |
