Summary: | In the novel 'Sebaldus Nothanker' (1773—1776), written by Friedrich Nicolai and exceptionally successful when it was published, the main figure is a pietist who unlike the other characters in the book is not portrayed realistically but rather as a conglomeration of various pious deformations. Nicolai used this figure to give a satirical picture of his autobiographical experiences and his perception of religious hypocrisy at that time. In his study, the author describes the origin and the literary function of this figure. In doing so, he places the early reception history of pietism in its context in the Age of Enlightenment. |
