Summary: | Israel followed the Iron Age kingdom onto the stage of history. This is shown by evidence gathered outside of the Old Testament, which however on closer examination tallies with Old Testament sources. Hypotheses concerning an Israel prior to the rise of the nation state, which hitherto have shaped our view of Israel's history, will not stand up to critical scrutiny. The biblical depiction of Israel prior to its becoming a nation state reflects the situation and the hopes of post-exilic Judaism. The way in which Old Testament Judaism as God's people, but not yet a nation state, lives up to that ideal state which obeys God's commandments has become exemplary for the church. |
