Summary: | The article examines the relation of J.J. Spalding's and F.D.E. Schleiermacher's understanding of religion as presented in their major works 'Religion, eine Angelegenheit des Menschen' (1797) and 'Ueber die Religion: Reden an die Gebildeten unter ihren Veraechtern' (1799). The author analyzes Schleiermacher's work, understood to represent a new start in 19th century church history, in comparison to the work by Spalding, who was a leading figure in German Protestant enlightenment theology. He shows that close links existed and influenced Schleiermacher's putatively revolutionary work, and sheds new light on what up to now has been called a break in church history. He also stresses the importance of Spalding, who was nearly forgotten for almost two centuries, in the context of both the debate on religion and 19th century Protestant theology. |
