Description
Summary:When the churches had to discuss the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification it was a controversial question whether the Formula of Concord (FC) belongs to the official confessional documents of the Church of Wuerttemberg. Whereas the leaders of the Church of Wuerttemberg claimed in spring 1997 that this church is bound to the FC as well as to the Book of Concord as a whole, the author shows that this is not the case: During the centuries after the Reformation the confessional basis of the Wuerttembergian Church underwent considerable changes. The Book of Concord never held the position of a confessional document to be signed by the pastors of the church. The obligation to sign the FC was in force only in the Duchy of Old Wuerttemberg; in the early 19th century it was replaced by the obligation to sign the Confession of Augsburg.
