Description
Summary:This article focuses on the controversy the Lutheran pastor Hermann Rahtmann (1585—1628) from Danzig had with some Lutheran-orthodox theologians about the doctrine of the verbum externum. It points out that Rahtmann's dualism of letter and spirit, the inner and the outer respectively, not only reveals spiritualistic influences (C. Schwenckfeld, V. Weigel) but also has a certain similarity to John Calvins doctrine of the Lord's Supper. Rahtmann's position forced Lutheran-orthodox theologians to specify in a controversial and systematic theological way how the doctrine of the efficacia verbi divini has to be understood. They did this for instance by applying aspects of their theology of the sacraments as well as of their Christology to the doctrine of the Holy Scripture and also by distinguishing different forms of the Word of God — in a way anticipating Karl Barth's concept. Especially Johann Gerhard's contributions are of central importance in this inner-Lutheran-orthodox process of theological clarification.
