Description
Summary:According to contemporary liturgists, in reviving Mass the Wittenberg reformers were victims of Latin liturgical tradition rather than actual liturgical reformers. This refers primarily to the eucharistic character of the Lord's Supper, whose importance had diminished in the Latin tradition and become completely lost in the Lutheran Reformation. The main reason for this 'aberration' is seen in Ambrose of Milan's consecratory interpretation of the Words of Institution, an interpretation whose prevalence in the Western church is judged unfortunate. The author of the article contradicts this theory. She shows how the emergence of the Words of Institution as part of the Liturgy in the Early Church and their consecratory interpretation clarify the theological meaning of the Eucharist. Then she goes on to show that Luther when he built on this Latin heritage did so for specific theological reasons, which at the same time forced him to criticise this heritage. Therefore far from simply drawing out the lines of the Latin tradition he brought about a renewed understanding as well as a reform of the liturgical order of the Mass.
