| Summary: | This paper investigates the construction of Muslim identities among Brazilian reverts in a Sunni Islamic community in João Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil. Through participant observation and discourse analysis of the community members, our aim is to examine how understandings of the sacred and religiosity come about, as well as the forms of sociality in this group. We also consider, through the Islamic practices, how individuals organize their daily life based upon moral, socioeconomic and religious codes, which involve the construction of this identity. Thus, we analyze this identity construction through the dogma and practices of the traditional Islamic religion. |
