| Summary: | Following suggestions from Karl Rahner and Gilles Emery, this article looks to the economy for answers about where, within the immanent Trinity, the Holy Spirit proceeds to. After discussing the theological legitimacy of the question and drawing some initial conclusions – namely, that the Spirit proceeds from the Father to the Son, and then through the Son back to the Father – it discusses indications in the economy that conflict with these initial conclusions, and then proposes a resolution. It proposes that, by holding the Holy Spirit to be identical with the Spirit's very act of proceeding, and by understanding the Spirit's act of proceeding to be a circular movement from Father to Son and then back to the Father, the conflicting indications of the economy can be resolved. |
