Summary:“In contemporary theology it has been apparent for some time that there are serious problems in the language of Athanasius and the Christological formulas of the early church, and there has been an intensive search for a new idiom and conceptual structure to reinterpret the meaning of ‘God was in Christ.’ … I will sketch briefly some of the insuperable problems in the traditional Christological formulas, some recent proposals for the reconstruction of Christology, and the basic themes to which future Christology must attend.”
