Summary:The declaration that priests are to ‘defend the poor' is new to the Common Worship ordinal but there is the latent assumption in earlier ordinals that ministry among those who are materially poor is part of priestly ministry. In this paper I use the four-fold Eucharistic action of taking, blessing, breaking and distribution as a framework for offering some reflection on the call to priests to ‘defend the poor'.
