Summary:This article traces the development and contrasts between the early and later political thought of Jacques Maritain, arguing that, beneath the superficial appearance of a radical move from papalist monarchical conservatism towards democratic liberalism, we can see deeper continuities: a consistent qualified support for democracy and religious freedom on the one hand, and an affirmation of the primacy of the spiritual over and against secular liberalism on the other.
