Résumé:To read Machiavelli not as a Machiavellian, but rather as something much more morally justifiable, has had a long and distinguished history. Many commentators have argued in attempts to burnish Old Nick's reputation that the notorious Florentine is, in fact, a patriot, an objective scientist of politics, one in a long line of civic humanists, a populist, or a committed republican who satirizes the nefarious ways of monarchs. James Harrington, who did so much to make Machiavelli respectable in England by associating him with the republican cause, and whom Benner cites as a kindred reader of the Florentine, himself admits that Machiavelli's writings are “in some places justly reprovable” (The Commonwealth of Oceana and A System of Politics, ed.
