Summary: | Maurizio Viroli offers us a very insightful and extremely learned book about the role of religious freedom and religiosity in modern Italian history. This topic has been continuously debated in the last few decades. In fact, the book is the English translation of the original Italian version that has found relevance on the populated shelf of books dealing with the place of Catholicism and religious liberty in Italian political history., Viroli, who teaches politics at Princeton University, has been widely appreciated for his works on Machiavelli. With this book he confirms that he masters the history of political thinking in Italy, but most importantly, he gives an extremely interesting reading of the historical tension between public morality, Catholic morality, and religious freedom. |
