Summary: | This is a significant contribution to scholarship concerning the bitter arguments over the Caroline church that preceded the Civil War. As in his previous book, Defining the Jacobean Church: The Politics of Religious Controversy 1603-1625, Prior seeks to move discussion beyond the focus on doctrine, to “restore religion to our understanding of constitutionalism” (p. 3), to demonstrate a closer link between law, politics, and religion in these disputes, and to counter the notion that they resulted in an Erastian triumph of the common law and secular state over ecclesiastical law and an oppositional church. |
