Description
Summary:As indicated in the subtitle, The Early Church on Killing is a sourcebook. More specifically, it is a collection of excerpts from pre-Constantinian authors regarding various types of killing and blood spilling, including abortion, infanticide, capital punishment, gladiatorial contests, and, in particular, war (and related military service). This “comprehensive sourcebook” is divided into four unequal parts: Christian writers before Constantine (pp. 19–115), Church orders and synods (pp. 119–25), miscellaneous items (pp. 129–33), and other evidence of Christian soldiers before Constantine (pp. 137–62). The book begins with a brief introduction and concludes with a fuller afterword, both written by the editor, Ronald J.
