Summary: | This book is an ethnographic study of women of North African immigrant background living in Petit Nanterre. In the northwestern inner suburbs of Paris, Petit Nanterre has a long history as a residence of mostly impoverished postcolonial immigrants—a history that the author discusses. Selby bases her book on the almost two years she spent living in the area, during which time she became familiar with the area, its female residents, and a number of community associations that provide services and activities for these women and their families. That experience has produced a study that is ethnographically rich, gives space and voice to the women, and problematizes the attitudes of the French state and the “Franco-French” toward them. |
