| Zusammenfassung: | The conflict between freedom and other values has always been especially problematic in constitutional democracies such as the United States. We prize liberty, but we also recognize that it competes against other goods, and determining which value ought to prevail in any particular controversy is a tricky affair. The nature and strength of our commitment to freedom becomes even more complex when two additional variables are introduced: first, the extent to which religious autonomy is worthwhile; and second, the distinction between our collective national political commitment to the religious autonomy of individuals as compared with that of institutions., Stephen Monsma's new book ably and comprehensively explores the last of these questions. |
