What has been overlooked by scholars (especially North American) is the steady growth of charismatic renewal (CR) within Catholicism. This movement parallels several of the characteristics of Pentecostal Protestantism by focusing on “Jesus, praise, love of the Bible, awareness of evil, [and] spiritual gifts [from the Holy Spirit],” including healings from emotional and sometimes physical ailments (p. 5). In fact, Catholic CR is a direct response to, and has been stimulated by, the growth of Protestant Pentecostalism in Latin America. | ||
