Summary: | Research on religions in Latin America in the last forty years has shifted focus from liberation theology to ecclesial base communities to Pentecostal Protestantism to popular and indigenous religions. What has been overlooked by scholars (especially North American) is the steady growth of charismatic renewal (CR) within Catholicism. This movement parallels several of the characteristics of Pentecostal Protestantism by focusing on “Jesus, praise, love of the Bible, awareness of evil, [and] spiritual gifts [from the Holy Spirit],” including healings from emotional and sometimes physical ailments (p. 5). In fact, Catholic CR is a direct response to, and has been stimulated by, the growth of Protestant Pentecostalism in Latin America. |
