| Summary: | In their quests over the past half-century to professionalize their field, American Jewish historians have wielded sharp hatchets to the “cherry-trees” of community myth-making about their group's past. Whether it was to ascertain that Christopher Columbus's alleged Jewishness was neither true nor important or to note how insignificant Jewish military service was to the success of American wars and armed conflicts or even to admit that if Hebraic traditions somehow informed American democratic traditions, these teachings were almost completely filtered through Protestant lenses, academic practitioners have been committed to getting the story right. After all, they had close to a century of filiopietistic and apologetics written by tendentious amateur historians to set aside. |
