Description
Summary:This is a very distinctive and valuable book, but also at times a frustrating one. Pestana undertakes the ambitious task of surveying the role of religion in the British Atlantic world between the Reformation and the end of the eighteenth century. In doing so, she weaves together a narrative that effectively criss-crosses the Atlantic between Britain and America, and also gives significant attention to Africa. In addition, she further includes much discussion of religious interactions between colonists and Native Americans, a vital and fascinating subject too often neglected or marginalized in more conventional accounts of religious history. The book's breadth of scope thus brings into focus important comparative questions that are missed by more narrowly constructed analyses.
