Summary: | The editors have marshaled thirty-nine historians to give the scholar and the general reader a clear, comprehensive, and often delightful glimpse into one of the most dynamic periods in the history of Christianity. I added this volume to my summer reading with a touch of fear. Yet each morning a chapter or two unfolded, leading me later in the day to engage someone in conversation about the themes that had been superbly distilled and pleasingly considered. I regretted coming to the last chapter. It was a treat to be led from large theme to larger theme, across many countries and regions, and into a consideration of the enormous hopes for the Church at the beginning of the twentieth century. I admire the historian's craft so evenly present throughout this handsome volume. |
