Description
Summary:John Damascene’s Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith is the most influential by far of his theological treatises (in the East it is outstripped only by the influence of his liturgical poetry, notably his Easter Canon). It was edited by Dom Boniface Kotter in his magnificent edition of virtually all John’s theological treatises, published in the series Patristische Texte und Studien between 1969 and 1988: the life work of the editor. It is that text (PTS 12, 1973) that is printed in these volumes. This Sources chrétiennes edition of The Orthodox Faith seems to have had a chequered history; at least three people involved in the edition seem to have died in the course of preparation. This may explain some of the oddities of the introductory material.
