Summary: | Terence Donaldson's latest book is a model of purposeful and communicative writing. In just under 160 pages of text, a crucial and complicated subject is covered in a way that offers balanced information on source texts and secondary literature, yet makes a maximum appeal to readers to do their own thinking. Put differently: the book has been written with great social-scientific awareness, both in view of the object to be studied—the ancient texts—and of the present-day reading subject. This is both rare and salutary, for theologians are famous for their ability to read Christian phenomena in a social and historical vacuum, even when it concerns such socially relevant items as anti-Judaism and Christian self-definition vis-à-vis Jews. |
