Description
Summary:Catherine Hezser here presents us with a comprehensive book on Jewish slavery. In her introduction, she surveys the works written on this subject from the middle of the nineteenth century on. Her own emphasis is on the social aspect of slavery, and so she provides material from both anthropological and sociological studies for purposes of comparison. She also compares attitudes towards slavery in Judaism and the Greco-Roman world, as revealed in the Hebrew Bible, inter-testamental Jewish-Hellenistic literature, Talmudic literature, papyri, inscriptions, and Roman literature—especially Roman legal literature. Occasionally, she also refers to the position of early Christianity on slavery.
