Description
Summary:It is sometimes alleged that the Church down the centuries has ‘suppressed’ certain documents in the interest of ecclesiastical politics. That is of course true to some extent—one may think of the burning of Tyndale's version of the Scriptures, to take but one example—but sometimes it betrays an ignorance of the nature, and the history, of the biblical Canon, and a failure to recognize what may have been perfectly valid reasons for this ‘suppression’. There have always been members of the establishment, as far back as Amaziah, priest of Bethel, in the book of Amos, concerned to maintain the established tradition against all comers, but sometimes it is rather a matter of a concern to minimize any danger to the simple faith of ordinary believers.
