Summary: | This book is a truly provocative and creative exercise in biblical interpretation. Lawrence proposes to examine several of the gospel healing stories from the vantage point of those who are ‘sensory-disabled’. The standard approach of critical biblical scholarship too often views these materials from a perspective of ‘ableism’ or from a ‘severely able-bodied’ vantage point, which assumes that someone who has a sensory disability such as blindness, deafness, or some other type of ‘abnormal’ condition is out of the ordinary. To illustrate this approach, the author mobilizes an impressive array of interdisciplinary resources, including disability studies, cultural anthropology, ethnographic studies, and her own sure-footed knowledge of biblical criticism. |
