Summary: | Many will remember the arrival of the first English translations of the Philokalia as they began to be published in the 1960s. These were the work of G. E. H. Palmer, Philip Sherrard, and Kallistos Ware. The appearance of their pale green (later blue) covers in the bookshops both marked and generated a new and ecumenical interest in Orthodox spirituality., This volume of essays addresses what has been up to now the absence of scholarly literature on the Philokalia. The editors, Brock Bingamen (Protestant) and Bradley Nassif (Antiochene Orthodox), acknowledge the significance of the first English translations, and their ongoing debt to Kallistos Ware in continuing to stimulate interest in the text. But they add much that is new about its context and transmission and influence. |
