Summary: | Presenting these texts as the product of a ‘Victorine’ spirituality should encourage reflection on the extent to which this set of individually highly distinctive authors, Hugh, Adam, Achard, Richard, Walter, and Godfrey of St Victor, can usefully be seen as forming a ‘school’. An extensive introduction explores the question of the nature of ‘Victorine spirituality’ with some success. The introduction recognizes the difficulty of classifying many of these writings by genre or subject-matter. The Latin texts on which the translations are based vary in quality. This problem is variously addressed in the introductions to the individual translations. |
