| Summary: | Dr Hainthaler continues here the great work of scholarship initiated by Alois Grillmeier. It was conceived in response to the commemoration of the Council of Chalcedon in 1951. The master himself writes and the editor contributes in large measure with substantial assistance from Luise Abramowski and Tanios Bou Mansour. Andrew Louth gives a trim and helpful foreword to the English translation. As the work has expanded over the years so has its method and scope. Much more appears now of background to an analysis which remains focused on Christology in the strict sense: the interpretation of Christ in terms of ‘nature’, ‘person’, and the like. Some space is allowed to spirituality and religious feeling as distinct from ‘doctrine’, but not much. |
