Description
Summary:In this book, Susanna Drake looks at the development of the sexual slander against the Jews in early Christian works and situates violence against the Jews within this theological, rhetorical, and social framework. Drake states that ‘The present study has sought to demonstrate how sexual slander fit within the “larger complex of attitudes, values, and prejudices” toward Jews in late antiquity. To comprehend the anti-Jewish violence of this era, we must first understand the “representability” of Jewish life in early Christian discourses’ (p. 103)., In the first chapter, Drake looks at Paul’s letters, Justin Martyr’s Dialogue with Trypho, and the Epistle of Barnabas.
