Summary: | While many studies of the book of Isaiah have sought to approach the book from either a synchronic or diachronic perspective, Mary Katherine Y. H. Hom deliberately sets out to incorporate both methods in this revision of her doctoral dissertation, completed under the supervision of Robert P. Gordon at the University of Cambridge. Her main point of entry into the book is an exploration of how the Assyrians are characterized in Isaiah. Although Assyria was a significant military threat during the life of Isaiah of Jerusalem at the end of the eighth century bce, Hom demonstrates that the characterization of Assyria continued beyond this period, including later portrayals of Babylon. |
