Summary: | Mark Leuchter’s study of the figure of Samuel is, to some limited degree, a reconstruction of a historical Samuel, although this monograph as a whole mainly explores the development of the Samuel tradition, especially in the Deuteronomistic work of Samuel–Kings. Leuchter examines Samuel acting in three different roles—prophet, priest, and judge—but argues that the portrayal of Samuel as Levitical priest ultimately forms the basis for the other roles in which he is presented (p. 8). It is this historical Levite who, over time, is portrayed no longer as a priest but as prophet and judge. |
