Σύνοψη:As a question about the philosophical status of belief in God, that of the relationship between evidence and religious belief has been contested since early modernity, and it has been pursued with new vigour in the last century or so. The first section of this book is entitled ‘Exploring the Demand for Evidence’, but the first two essays take us back to pre-modern themes. James Ross and Linda Zagzebski present arguments, respectively, about the role of faith in epistemology (from Aquinas) and, via the consensus gentium argument (of Cicero), about the way we trust ourselves epistemically. In contemporary garb these amount to arguments for the existence of God, but they do not begin from the widespread modern tendency to assume that religious belief is guilty until proved innocent.
