Description
Summary:Gerald O’Collins’s study probes the nature of ‘fundamental theology’ and seeks to ‘rethink’ it, even ‘relaunch’ it, at a time when he observes a tendency for university departments to drop it. What is fundamental theology? O’Collins argues that the term arose in the nineteenth century, originally from Protestant theologians as they sought to operate in engagement with the Enlightenment. Since then the term has been adopted especially by Roman Catholic scholars, Rahner perhaps most notably, and there have been significant handbooks and readers published in the field (O’Collins is helpful in keeping his reader up to date on this literature).
