Description
Summary:Given Augustine’s significant use of memory and the originality of his treatment of it, it is surprising that there has been no monograph on the subject previously. This has now been rectified with the publication of Paige Hochschild’s Ph.D. thesis. Using a method which is historical and exegetical, she deftly and expertly traces the development of the role of memory in Augustine’s thought, her expressed aim being to make a contribution towards a picture of an Augustinian theory of knowledge., The book is divided into three parts: in Part I she explores the meaning and use of memory in the mainstream Platonic tradition as it developed, with a chapter on each of the three major figures—Plato, Aristotle, and Plotinus.
