| Summary: | Ambrose of Milan has in the modern period been studied for many reasons; more often than the innocent might expect, his theology is not one of them. Provincial governor turned church politician; spin-doctor of pro-Nicene ideology in a factionalized ecclesial world; rhetorician of respectable Christianity in a socially conscious capital; pick ‘n’ mix intellectual whose best ideas were borrowed, and whose main concern was image—but Ambrose as serious theologian? Hardly. This book challenges these preoccupations, yet manages to do so without exaggerating his doctrinal genius, or in any sense collapsing its account of his moral purposes into old-style hagiography. |
