| Summary: | Over the past two decades, scholars have increasingly come to realize that the New Testament epistles addressed to Timothy and Titus (collectively known as the Pastoral Epistles or simply Pastorals) have too long been studied as a literary corpus rather than as individual letters. In this slightly revised doctoral dissertation, supervised by Professor Jens Herzer and offered to the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig, Michaela Engelmann challenges the classic thesis of Heinrich Julius Holtzmann that the Pastoral Epistles are ‘inseparable triplets’. Overall, she argues that they were composed by three different (pseudonymous) authors over a longer period of time in the order 2 Timothy – Titus – 1 Timothy, whereby 1 Timothy was informed by both 2 Timothy and Titus. |
